Greetings!!
Happy Halloween!! The observance of Halloween, which dates back to Celtic rituals thousands of years ago, has long been associated with images of witches, ghosts, devils, pumpkins and hobgoblins. In the United States, the first official citywide Halloween celebration occurred in Anoka, Minn., in 1921. Over the years, Halloween customs and rituals have changed dramatically. Today, many of the young and young at heart take a more light-spirited approach. They don scary disguises or ones that may bring on smiles when they go door to door for treats, or attend or host a Halloween party.
One symbol of Halloween is the Pumpkin. It was interesting to learn that not only is the pumpkin a healthy fruit or an item to carve and put candles into, but:
- A pumpkin is a type of squash and is a member of the gourd family, which also includes squash, cucumbers, gherkins, and melons.
- Pumpkins have been grown in North America for five thousand years. They are indigenous to the western hemisphere.
- In 1584, after French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America, he reported finding "gros melons." The name was translated into English as "pompions," which has since evolved into the modern "pumpkin."
- Pumpkins are low in calories, fat, and sodium and high in fiber. They are good sources of Vitamin A, Vitamin B, potassium, protein, and iron
- The largest pumpkin ever grown was 1,689 pounds. It was grown by Joe Jutras of North Scituate, Rhode Island.
These and other interesting Halloween facts can be found at the History Channel. Check it out - its quite interesting. Regards, Boots & Ellen
