Two years ago I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It was the kick in the pants I needed to change my ways. I changed how I cook and what I eat, and successfully lost about 25 pounds. Then I got stuck and the weight started creeping back on. I knew I needed to get active - something I’ve never been too interested in doing. I tried water aerobics, I bought a bicycle, I bought a treadmill and didn’t have much success with any of it. Then, one day I walked into Fleet Feet to buy some new sneakers. That day truly changed my life. I met Mary who took a lot of time to tell me about the different programs and fit me with some great pair of Brooks Ghost. I’d never heard of Brooks, let alone Ghost, and thought the 10 on my shoe was the size. When I learned about the WalkFit program, I thought, “I can walk”. I finally found a fitness program I love. I started in the 5K, and with the encouragement of Coach Linda, I switched to the intermediate group. I’m doing things I never thought I would do...trail races, 5Ks, Winter Warrior, Core class, FIIT class and now a 19K with my sights set on walking a half marathon in the Fall. Sometimes I don’t recognize myself, nor do my family and friends. My brother said, “don’t take this the wrong way, but I never thought you’d be doing something like this”. Neither did I.
Today I can proudly say that I have lost 43 lbs. and my blood sugar is normal. It’s been a long, slow journey, but well worth it. I feel better, sleep better, have more energy, like the way I look, and am just happier. Most importantly, I have found a welcoming and encouraging community with Ellen as our best cheerleader, and I have made a lot of new friends. I ❤️ Fleet Feet!
